Paul is a Professor at Carleton University (Ottawa). Beginning in 2002, he held positions with Cloakware (Ottawa) including Chief Scientist and Principal Research Associate. From 1997 through 2001, he held various positions at Entrust including Chief Scientist, Vice President, and Chief Security Architect. Prior to Entrust being a public company, Paul was part of the Secure Networks division at Bell-Northern Research (BNR), the former R&D Lab of Northern Telecom. From 1988 to 1996 his work at BNR involved cryptographic research and consulting, product R&D, and participation in national and international security standards. He has an extensive background in mathematics, cryptography, and network security, and an international reputation through journal publications, conference activities, and standards work.

Paul completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science (Waterloo, 1988). He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR), and is currently on the Steering Group for the Internet Society's annual Network and Distributed System Security (NDSS) symposiums. He served as Program Co-chair for NDSS'01 and NDSS'02, and as General Chair of Crypto'93, as well as on program committees including USENIX Security, NDSS, Crypto, Eurocrypt, Asiacrypt, and the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (ACM CCS). His interests include all practical aspects of information security, including applied cryptography, network security, authentication in distributed systems, key management, security infrastructures, software security, and software protection.
